Reminder: It's Open Enrollment Time for Health Insurance

It's during this time of the year that you should enroll, re-enroll, or make changes to your health insurance plans for the coming year. This includes health insurance provided by your employer, health insurance you buy individually, and Medicare.

Provided by Your Employer

Open enrollment gives you a chance to review your needs and make changes to your coverage. It also allows you to sign up for additional benefits your employer may offer. Review the materials provided by your employer to ensure that you choose the right options for you.

Open enrollment for Medicare runs from October 15th to December 7th. During this period you can:

  • Switch from original Medicare to an Advantage Plan or go from an Advantage plan back to original Medicare.
  • Switch between Advantage Plans.
  • Change Medicare Plan D programs (drug benefits programs) if you have original Medicare.
  • Sign up for a Plan D program for the first time. (A note: if you did not sign up for Plan D when first eligible, you may pay a slightly higher premium).
  • Typically, you can usually sign up for or change a Medicare supplemental plan if you have original Medicare.
  • Sign up for Medicare if you didn't sign up when you turned 65 and were first eligible. has more information.

Bought Individually

Open enrollment for health insurance through or a state health insurance marketplace runs from November 1st to December 15th. This enrollment period is much shorter this year. If you don't enroll by December 15th, you will not be able to get coverage for 2018 unless you qualify for a special enrollment period.
